ENG 102: Black to the Future addresses the short story, poetry, and drama (a play) through a Black critical lens to develop your analytical writing. The course is a continuation of ENG 101, with further study of the resources of the language through a critical analysis of imaginative forms of writing. Emphasis will be placed upon well-organized written composition, factually-supported conclusions, and awareness of language variety. Effectiveness of expression and validity of judgment in the student’s writing are stressed. Genre reading will include fiction, poetry, and drama.
Students will be exposed to Black Speculative Fiction, identity poetry, African drama to gain exposure and understanding of some of the infinite manifestations of Blackness. These course texts will not only illuminate constructions of Black joy, success, and self-awareness, but they will also create the space for individually and collectively engaging in generative classroom conversations and agentive writing assignments that speak to and disrupt inequitable power practices.
